At turns delicate and animalic, pure and carnal, jasmine is rightfully considered one of perfumery's most versatile and valued notes. Both reverent and blasphemous, La Religieuse (“the nun”) uses its jasmine to paint a portrait of a woman in full, where sweet and comforting give way to hidden depths of animalic desire, and ultimately, to freedom. La Religieuse opens with a gourmand flourish, as the fresh, lightly green jasmine combines with sweet, sugared mimosa and smooth incense to evoke imagery of a saintly servant of god, pure in her devotion and intentions, bringing comfort and joy to those under her care. But as it evolves, and a more animalic civet note begins to coax out the other side of the jasmine, we realize that this woman has her own desires, her own fantasies, and her own yearning to escape the life that has been given to her. While the sweetness lingers, the incense now feels dirtier, the musk sexier. La Religieuse never goes fully down and dirty, but the transition is thrillingly palpable: our heroine, while she might never go completely wild, is no longer content to be anyone's silent bride. Once again, Serge Lutens has delivered us a gorgeous, encompassing fragrance that tells a story we won't soon forget.

Notes:

Jasmine, incense, civet.

Was Hoping for Diderot, but got Dictionary

This perfume was extremely simple, one-note on me. It never seemed to mature past the jasmine/white flower note, which I found to be quite heavy and a little cloying. The overall feeling: heavy, thick-feeling in the nose and throat, and a little suffocating. Gets a touch ammoniac as it ages on the skin. I was hoping that a perfume inspired by Diderot would encompass some of his fabulous complexity, but instead it gave the one-note-simplicity of the dictionary's entry for "eau jasmin". I would only recommend if you are a big fan of jasmine. Definitely of perfume of a past era, it felt more "grandma's cosmetic box nostalgia" than "sinning nuns". Two points for fun color (presentation) and aged, mysterious vibes, definitely an evening scent. Overall: underwhelming, and not with current perfumery trends, if vintage is not your thing.

Addictive

I got this perfune as a sample at Barney’s few years ago and it just became my personal favorite. It’s so personal,I love that the scent lingers all day .. it’s very quiet and intimate.. almost hypnotic.

Lovely

Delicate and feminine, floral, not too animalic or dirty as some reviewers say...I can't find anything I don't like about it other than I Wish it lasted longer on my skin. I think it's gone in about an hour.
