A French colony for three hundred years, it has different neighbourhoods and cultures which coexist in perfect harmony: the ville Blanche, the French quarter characterized by order, coolness, the Mediterranean architecture, with colonial villas, pastel colours, bougainvillaea. Carefully tended gardens, small restaurants and shops. And the ville Noire, the Indian quarter, which swarms with life, noises, smells and strong colours, markets and temples. A holiday spot on the Gulf of Bengal, bohemian and jet set, it is also a centre of great spirituality.
