At the time, in a city of Naples, there lived two brothers: Qassim and Ali Baba. When their father, a man of modest means, had passed into the mercy of the Lord, the two brothers divided equally the property left by their father. Of course, the inheritance did not greatly improve the condition of the two brothers, because the goods left by their father were very little, but Qassim was far more fortunate, as he met and married a young woman of "good family".
Ali Baba, on the other hand, lived in a poor house, after marrying a poor woman like himself, and his only wealth was that of owning three donkeys. One day, as he was walking up the hill to reach the summit of Mount Somma, he heard a dull noise approaching.
He thought of the horses' hooves, and as the place was without a passing way and very lonely, he feared at once that it was a gang of galloping thieves. He was quite right, but his mind was so quick and clear that he could climb the branch of a tree to keep himself hidden.
They approached and counted them all: exactly forty, forty thieves. The leader of the band, in the deafening silence of the others, shouted: "Open sesame!" and, as soon as he said these words, a rock turned on itself and moved, giving way to a small gap where all forty, in single file, began to descend. Ali Baba was incredulous and intrigued, and as soon as they all came out of this strange place and then left, he came down from the tree. He was too curious to know what was in this strange place, and remembered the words spoken by one of the forty thieves, so that the rock would move and allow him to enter.
With anxious curiosity, he began to descend slowly, and once the soles of his shoes stepped on the last step, his eyes remained incredulous to look at what he was seeing in front of him.
There were chests overflowing with coins and blindingly gilded stones, but he dwelt on what, in his opinion, was even more precious. In a corner, almost set apart, thousands of Neapolitan babas to be dipped in rum. The scent was so strong that his mouth watered, and he immediately rushed upon them. I eat one... two... three... Then he paused to think.
He thought of his people, of those who had no riches just like him and, without hesitation, he took a couple of sacks brought from home to fill them with wood and began, instead, to put dozens and dozens of those magnificent sweets with an irresistible smell into them.
On the way home, he had only one thought fixed in his mind: his wife and his people; He couldn't wait to feed them with his wonderful booty. When he arrived at the scene, he started whistling loudly and shouting random names, people looked out... He began to open the bags, and suddenly a crowd gathered around him. Men, women, children and his woman, everyone was happy. They started cheering him on, loaded him into their arms, and started blowing him up, higher and higher.
From that moment on, happily, Ali Baba became the King of babas among his poor people.
