A meditative swirl of serene incense, intensified by smoked wood. At first, this brings to mind a stark, secluded chapel and a life of plain and simple pleasures. But as it develops, notes of whiskey, tobacco and cinnamon begin to shimmer through the incense, and you start to think that perhaps these pleasures won't be quite so plain, after all. If you have ever enjoyed a fine Islay Scotch whiskey, such as Lagavulin or Laphroaig, you are familiar with the way the intricacies of smoke and moss add a complicated and enigmatic appeal – harsh and medicinal one moment, mesmerizing the next. The layers of smoked cade wood, oakmoss and whiskey have a similar effect here, as bracing jolts of smoke morph into the airy tranquility of incense, keeping us endlessly intrigued and hopelessly addicted. A starkly elegant fragrance that puts us in a trance.

Notes

tobacco, whiskey, cinnamon, amber, cistus labdanum, oakmoss, smoked cade wood, Somalian incense

The Ultimate Woodsmoke Fragrance

I almost exclusively wear woody, dry, smoky, balsamic, naturalistic, incense-centric perfumes. Bois d’Ascèse is my holy grail. From the first application I was utterly hooked. It elicits such cozy memories—living in a house with a fireplace, the lingering scent of woodsmoke mingling with my perfume, nights under the stars, curling up with someone around the campfire. Beautiful, intimate, deeply evocative, and spiritual in nature. Especially lovely in the fall and winter months. Highly recommend.

GOAT on campfire smell

Ironic that our Promethean ancestors might have first been concocting colognes to cover their smoky default smell and here I am trying to smell like I prepped my moka pot over an open flame... So I went to the reddit thread "Fragrances that smell like a campfire, brush fire, etc..?" and tried almost all of them-- Arso is great but not particularly memorable. Patchouli-24 may leave you counting the hours until you can hit the shower "undo" button. City on Fire works if you're feeling particularly punchy-punk rock and want to see the world burn-- but that isn't a sustainable long run vibe. BdA is my go-to for day to day-- I like that I pick up a hint of unburned redwood/cedar in it and that it hangs in my hair after dry down the same way a scouting trip or relaxing Sierras getaway would.

Bois d'Ascès

This is my favorite scent at the moment. It's perfectly smokey, and not in a bbq sort of way. Notes that hit my nose the most are whiskey cedar and oakmoss. If I could afford the full bottle I would grab it in a heartbeat, but I'll have to stick to the 5ml size until then.
