Put waffles and praline aside, Belgium doesn’t place in front-page news so often. However, today’s article zooms in on the Antwerp designer, Dries Van Noten, and his collaboration with French perfumery, Editions de Parfums, aka Frederic Malle. A collaboration that gave birth to one of those twisted gourmand fragrances that grabs everyone’s interest, even people who inject insulin.
Both men come from different trends but they’re eager for appreciation of beauty in all shapes. For this project, a talented perfumer, Bruno Jovanovic, gave this collide.
Mr. Jovanovic blends a potion that reflects both Belgium and Van Noten's designs. It's the fruit of, reportedly, eighteen months of work on this sandalwood-oriented perfume to emerge a fragrance that smells ambiguously gourmand like waffle and praline without being obviously so.
To get to this, he hires several spices like nutmeg and cloves, a row of woody notes like guaiac, patchouli, and milky sandalwood, and a touch of leather (saffron) and sandpaper it with vanilla. The result is like you’re shopping at Bergdorf Goodman’s for Christmas, it’s snowing in NY and the streets are ornamented with golden lights. It’s like a yummy waffle just came out of a waffle iron.
