In a corner of the gigantic realm of today’s perfumery, stands an artisanal and artistic movement that has been derived from the body of niche perfumery, named indie-niche or artisanal; though the term is debatable.
Anabasis opens with a perfect, cool, green mentholated shiso with a squeeze of lemon juice. A chalky green quality comes with this robust freshness that emerges from the shiso leaves. Shiso is not a common note in perfumery. Apart from its metallic nuances, it demonstrates a breathtaking freshness reminiscent of the brittle stems of early spring.
Anabasis starts to smell like a garden of mint surrounded by freshly cut grass. It’s cool, green, and herbal. The heart is like an evergreen forest with frigid mountain air. The dry down is like evergreens, a crystal-clear musk, and lemony resins that resemble a sheen of frankincense in the very deep dry down, but it’s not entirely so. The coniferous notes of pine needles and cedar are reinforced with a tad of bitterness from birch tar.
From the mentholated and slightly sweet greenness on top to the rounded smoky musks and lemon juice in the base, it exhibits a wearable, wild, and fashionable vibe.
This contributes to the overall hazy, fog-laden atmosphere. There's an intriguing element at play here that renders it almost ethereal. I appreciate that. It doesn't cling too tightly to the surface, yet it doesn't prominently stand out either.
